Lutsen 99er Post-Race Weather Round Up
The sky may have cleared up just in time for the race but the previous days rain had already taken its toll on the trail...
"Crazy muddy, huh?" I asked a fellow female rider as I slowly chugged passed her on a slippery uphill singletrack. "Yea. This sucks!" she quickly snapped back. For a rider that thrives off of the technical sections, I was loving the mega mud fest that the Lutsen 99er had to offer on the last 4 miles of the race. Where I lost ground on the paved road, I gained it back in the clay-like mud. Maybe it was the fact that every time I got off my bike my legs would immediately cramp up so I tried my hardest to stay in the saddle and crank through that crazy mud.
A weather station 4.9 miles NE of Tofte reported 1.14 inches of rain in the 3 days leading up to race. That's a lot considering that the majority of Minnesota, especially the lower third, has received above normal precipitation from April to June.
I wish I had gotten video of that epic mud section but I was too darn busy trying to stay on the bike. All in all, the weather held up nicely for the race. A cool, Canadian breeze helped perk up the riders with every pedal. After starting off the race in the mid 50's, conditions warmed up rather quickly. The temperature went from 61° to 77° in just one hour as a northeast, downsloping wind increased during the afternoon.
Besides the gigantic mud pit at the end of the trail, everyone was talking about how nice the weather was that day. While Minneapolis was getting rain, Lutsen was soaking in sun. We got lucky this year...hoping our luck stays with us for next year's Lutsen 99er. I know I'm already looking forward to it!
Summer brings warm afternoons perfect for biking, but the summer heat and humidity can also spark thunderstorms and severe weather. Be prepared for any type of adverse weather headed your way with Aeris Pulse.
